puffy pockets baby blanket

Puffy Pockets Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern

The Puffy Pockets Baby Blanket is named thanks to its puffy pockets of warmth that will keep your baby nice and toasty in the colder weather!  It’s great for carseats and strollers.  At any time of the year, even in the summer when your baby is in an air conditioned room, this blanket is very useful.

It is a simple 5 row repeat and easy to learn.  It’s the kind of blanket that you can knit while watching TV or in conversation with someone.  I swear, it almost knits itself!

Where did this little gem come from?

Years ago I found my mother’s knitting bag and in there was an unfinished baby blanket project. A small crinkled piece of paper listed the 5 row repeat for this blanket. I picked it up and started knitting per her small bit of instructions and ended up with the most wonderful, squishy soft stroller sized blanket.

And on top of that, this baby blanket is textured, puffy and reversible! It can be knit as wide or as long as you want.

Use a larger needle for a more light and airy blanket, or a smaller needle for a warmer, denser blanket. The stroller size is 22 x 28. Cast on more stitches in increments of 5 for a wider, crib sized blanket.

You can use any worsted or aran weight yarn!

The puffy pockets of warmth that you knit with this pattern are so squishy and soft, you will just love it! This blanket just zips along in no time at all and is easy enough for a beginner but interesting enough for even the most seasoned knitter!

Yarn

For this project I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn.  And oh how I love it!  It is 100% acrylic it is great for young parents who enjoy throwing the blankets in and out of the washer and dryer without worry.  It simply gets softer and softer with wash and wear.

I Love This Yarn is available at Hobby Lobby online.

From me to you → a coupon from Hobby Lobby that does not expire

Baby Shower Gift Idea → Dock-A-Tot.  My daughters swear by this for their babies.  Sleep is not a luxury!  Wrap this up with your Puffy Pockets Blanket and you will have a very delighted new mama!

This blanket also looks gorgeous in Lion Brand’s Landscape Yarn.  Watch as the color changes throughout the blanket like brilliant bands of color in a sunset.

Needles

There are so many great choices for needles.  I prefer using circular needles for all projects because the knitting stays safely on the cord.  Especially when knitting a blanket, you will need circular needles even when you are not knitting in the round.

In this case I used Knitpicks Interchangeable Needles.

You simply cannot go wrong with these wonderful needles!

I used size 8 with a 24″ cord.

I would also like to mention this other great set of interchangeable circular needles from Annie’s Craft Store.  They are certified for airport security so if you are thinking about traveling by air, these could be a good choice.  They also come in a great little compact case.
