Yarn

The best way to choose is to consider the baby’s needs and what kind of blanket you want to make. If you want a soft and cozy blanket, choose yarn made from natural fibers like cotton or wool. These materials are gentle on a baby’s delicate skin and will keep them warm and comfortable throughout the night. If you’re looking for a more durable option, consider using acrylic yarn. This type of yarn is easy to care for and can withstand frequent washings.

This Tiny Kisses baby blanket is knit with Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn Prints” in “After Dinner Laughs”

How much yarn should I buy?

Assuming a gauge of 4.5 stitches to the inch:

  • Stroller: 400 yards for 22 x 28
  • Baby: 700 yards for 28 x 36
  • Small: 1000 yards for 34 x 40
  • Medium: 1300 yards for 36 x 46
  • Large: 1600 yards 42 x 50

Needles

Once you have your yarn, you’ll need knitting needles in an appropriate size for your chosen yarn weight. Make sure they are comfortable to hold and easy to work with for extended periods of time. You may also want to invest in a pair of stitch markers to help keep track of your progress and prevent mistakes.

For my blankets I often recommend Knit Picks Needles.   These are the Knitpicks: Sunstruck Options Interchangeable Circular Set that I just love.  The wood is warm in my hands and the joins are smooth.

Pattern

As you work through the pattern, make sure to check your stitch count and gauge regularly to ensure that your blanket will turn out the correct size. If you do make a mistake, don’t panic! Most mistakes can be fixed by undoing a few rows and redoing them correctly.
