Maxi’s Easy Baby Hat Knitting Pattern

This is a Boston baby and she is going to need a hat! I love knitting a hat to go with a handknit blanket.  It’s a personalized gift that will touch the heart of a new parent.

Needles

Have you tried the “shorties” by Knitpicks?  They are just great for knitting hats.  I used a size 8 needle with a gauge of 18 stitches per 4 inches.  Using a 16″ cord, the tips are small and easier to use with small hat projects when knitting in the round.

Magic Loop

I usually prefer knitting in the round on small needles for hat projects but often when the baby hat is for a preemie or newborn, I will use the magic loop technique.  For that I needed a 32″ cord so I used these wonderful needles – Knitpicks Options Interchangeable Needles.

Hat Instructions:

For newborn size:

Cast on 54 stitches with a size 8 circular needle.

Purl one row.

Join and knit in the round for 7″.

Use the kitchener stitch to bind off.

Make 2 pompoms and sew them on.

Conclusion

It doesn’t take much to keep a new baby warm or to touch the heart of a new parent.  This hat can be knit in an evening with leftover yarn from another project.  If you knit a baby blanket first, it is fun to save half a skein to make the matching hat.  The pompoms add a lot of fun too!

You may not have time to read this now so pin for later!
