Size 8 needles with a 16″ cord and a gauge of 18 stitches per 4 inches.  Gauge is not strictly important but if your style of knitting is loose or tight you will end up with a larger or smaller scarf, so adjust accordingly.  Swatching does help!

Pompom Scarf Knitting Pattern

Choose 6 colors

With size 8 needles, cast on 52 stitches.  Gauge is not important with this pattern.  If you want to know exactly how wide it will be, swatching will help.

Join in the round.

With Color A: Knit in the round for 10″

With Color B: Knit in the round for 10″

With Color C: Knit in the round for 10″

With Color D: Knit in the round for 10″

With Color E: Knit in the round for 10″

With Color F: Knit in the round for 10″

Then: K2tog for one round.

Break yarn, leaving a 12″ tail and weave through live stitches and pulling tight.

Turn scarf inside out.  Because the inside of this scarf will never see the light of day again, simply tie the ends together in a knot and clip the yarn, leaving about a 1″ tail.

Blocking

Knitpicks: Blocking Basics is a great resource to explain blocking techniques.

I like to use a capful of Eucalan in a warm sink of water and soak the piece for 20 minutes.  Then take it out of the bath and roll it up in a towel.  Unwrap and pin to a blocking map.  This scarf was too long for that, so I simply pinned it to the carpet in my guest room and let it dry for about 2 days.

It’s my way of saying ‘job well done yarn!  It opens it up and makes the scarf stitches uniform.

Adding the pompoms:

Using the strings of the pompom to attach to the scarf, thread them through your craft needle and weave them through the cast on edge. every 4-6 inches.  Pull tight.  Tie a knot, then a bow, then knot the bow.  Using your craft needle or a crochet hook, poke the strings through the outside of the scarf into the inside.  Repeat with the other edge.

Next: wrap your cuddly soft pompom scarf around your neck and head out into the cold. Soft and cuddly, this is a wonderful and warm scarf to wear all winter long.
