Cuddly Soft Babies Blanket Knitting Pattern

This little baby blanket knitting pattern is so cuddly, soft and easy to knit, you will want to knit this for all the new babies in your life!

If you can knit, purl, yarn over and knit 2 together, this pattern will be easy for you. I’ve made this blanket several times while reading or watching TV. It just whips up so quickly and is a hit at the baby showers.

This baby blanket knitting pattern can be made for any length or width.

Yarn

For this project I used about 500 yards of Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn.  And oh how I love it!  It is 100% acrylic it is great for young parents who enjoy throwing the blankets in and out of the washer and dryer without worry.  It simply gets softer and softer with wash and wear.

Here are approximate estimates of yarn needed for different size blankets. Assuming a gauge of 4.5 stitches to the inch:

  • Stroller: 400 yards for 22 x 28
  • Baby: 700 yards for 28 x 36
  • Small: 1000 yards for 34 x 40
  • Medium: 1300 yards for 36 x 46
  • Large: 1600 yards 42 x 50

I Love This Yarn is available at Hobby Lobby online.

It’s also available on Etsy.

To achieve the multi color effect, I knit each section with a different color of “I Love This Yarn”.  It was a great stashbusting project and I was able to use the colors in the baby’s nursery.  The size of this blanket was 26 x 32.

I recommend using acrylic yarn for this project because I have found time and again that even when new parents have the best intentions, the blankets made with washable wool end up in the dryer too many times and get felted.

Knitpicks has a great acrylic yarn line called Brava which I also highly recommend for this pattern.

Needles

I like to knit with size 8 needles, which are the recommended size for the yarn I chose.  The set that I used are Knitpicks Interchangeable Options Rainbow Wood Needles.  These needles are just gorgeous!  The wood feels so warm in my hands, the joins are smooth and the cables are flexible.  I used a 24″ cable.  Everything comes in a handy vinyl case.

If you are traveling in the near future, you might want to consider buying these needles from Annie’s Craft Store.  They are certified for airport security and come in a really great compact case.

What I love about this blanket is that I can knit it anywhere and everywhere!  Here I am at our condo in Florida, on the patio, gazing at the gulf.  The pattern is super simple to memorize and practically knits itself.  It is a 14 row repeat but it is very easy to tell where you are in the pattern.

Then we took the kids and grandkids to Disney.  I brought along the blanket thinking there was no way I’d have time to knit.  But one morning I woke up early and sat on the balcony.  We stayed at the Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge.  Outside the balcony was an antelope!  I have to say this was the very first time I ever knit while watching an antelope graze in the yard.

After Disney we headed back to the condo.  Another gorgeous day in paradise knitting on the patio.  I live in upstate New York so this is a wonderful treat.

Last night I finished knitting the blanket using a stretchy bind off. I spent nearly an hour watching TV and weaving in the ends.  I had decided to switch colors after each 14 row repeat, so there were several ends to weave.  Perfect for netflix!

Late this morning I photographed the blanket on a side table by the window and went off to get lunch for the gang.

When I came back to the patio I found my 6 year old grandson taking a nap.  This stroller sized blanket, in pink and yellow didn’t begin to cover him up, but it was soft and cuddly and he curled up and fell asleep!  Isn’t this precious?  I love his sandy toes peeking out.

This cuddly soft baby blanket is going to its new home in a couple weeks.  My girlfriend had a beautiful new baby granddaughter to celebrate.  I love to knit for gifts and for friends and really enjoyed knitting this blanket.
