double brim beanie with easter eggs

Double Brimmed Toddler Beanie

I think I finally found a way to make a double brimmed beanie! I have tried so many different ways including using a provisional cast on or picking up stitches from the cast on edge and knitting and inside brim.  But in this case I tried something a bit simpler and it seemed to work.

Yarn

For this project I used the gorgeous Malabrigos Rio Worsted Weight Yarn in Azul Profundo for the main color and then Bobby Blue, Cape Cod Gray and Denim Blue for the fair isle colors.

My daughter bought me a dozen skeins from Native Twist Studio on Etsy for Christmas.  That was one of my favorite gifts!

This yarn is so soft and superwash and I just love it.  Because we are in quarantine I have decided to use only the yarn that is in my stash.  That meant that the colors I chose were not high contrast like I usually prefer.  However I do think that the fair isle on the brim did give the hat some pizzazz.

I plan on knitting this hat again with different colors.

Here is the yarn that I used, wound and partially used:

Needles

For the Double Brimmed Beanie I used the Knitters Pride Needles Ginger 16″ needles size 6 and size 7 for a gauge of 4 stitches per inch.  Gauge of course is very important when making a hat.  This hat is for a 2 year old toddler so it needed to be 16″ in circumference.

Here are my favorite needles for knitting hats.knitting needles and case

Pattern

Toddler Sized Beanie, 16″ circumference by 8″ tall

With long tail cast on, using size 6 needle, cast on 63 stitches

Knit 18 rows

Purl 1 row

Change to size 7 needles.

Knit 4 rows

Follow chart for 9 rows

Knit 5 rows

Fold your cast on end up to your current working edge on the inside.  The fair isle side is the outside, the cast on edge is inside.  Using your left needle, slip off the first cast on stitch, then with the size 6 needle, knit the 2 stitches together.  Continue along until all stitches from the cast on edge are knit together with the live stitches.

You will now be knitting with the size 6 needle.

Continue knitting in the round until the entire piece measures 6.5″

Change to DPN’s or magic loop and begin decreases.

Next row:  Knit 2, k2tog* repeat to end

Next row: Knit

Next row: Knit 1, k2tog* repeat to end

Next row: Knit

Next row: k2tog * repeat to end

Weave yarn through remaining stitches, pull tight and secure, closing up the hole.

Pompom

For this project I did not make a pompom.  But if I did, I would pull out my trusty  Clover Pompom maker.
