Knitting the Troy Boy Christmas Stockings

Here is another set of Christmas Stockings that I made for a friend’s grandsons.  They are ages 3 and 1 and my girlfriend approached me with emotion in her eyes, saying how much it would mean to her if I made her grandsons stockings.

Can you say “knit-worthy”?

I cast on with a strand of the Buttercup held together with a strand of  Plymouth Encore Yarn, which I love for stockings because it is an 75% acrylic and 25% wool blend that gives the stockings enough oomph but are still soft and drape well and is inexpensive as well.

After one row of holding the Buttercup and the Encore yarn held together, I dropped the buttercup and cut that yarn. I joined in the round and knit for 6 rows with the Encore, in white.

Then, using the Cascade Christmas Stocking Pattern, free on Ravelry, I followed the pattern, picking charts as I went along per their instructions.

This Christmas Stocking uses the afterthought heel. It was fun learning how to do that on a larger project, because I have since used the afterthought heel on regular pairs of socks.

Learning about sock construction can help with knitting Christmas Stockings. In particular there are different ways to knit an afterthought heel.

I truly loved making these Christmas Stockings and I know my friend and her grandchildren will cherish them forever.
